We are thrilled to be hosting an author talk as part of Compass Festival 2026; a conversation between music journalist Rosin O'Connor and culture writer and Big Joanie lead singer, Stephanie Phillips to celebrate Stephanie's latest book WE WERE HERE: A History of Black People and Alternative Music.
The book is an exploration of the history we thought we knew of rock 'n' roll and uplifts the lost voices of Black artists who were foundational to the development of the alternative music scene from the 1930s to today. Praised by musicians such as Skin, Thurston Moore, and Kathleen Hanna, the book is a must-read for any music fan.
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A, as well as the opportunity for Stephanie to sign copies of the book.
